Michael's Story

On September 12, 2006, I stayed home from work with a bad cold. Knowing I had used all my vacation time I planned to work in the afternoon. After showering and dressing, I went to talk with my wife, Nancy. She asked me to look directly at her face and say something. When I did she noticed that the right corner of my mouth was drooping down. Nancy talked me into going to get medical attention immediately. She was once a trained EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and knew what she was talking about.

We drove to a local hospital and the emergency room doctor examined me. At first he thought that I might have Bells Palsy. (Bells Palsy is a disorder where the whole side of your face is temporarily paralyzed.) However, there was one problem with that diagnosis - my eyebrow was not frozen. The E.R. doctor kept repeating the same tests on me for two hours. He wasn't sure what was wrong. After consulting with a neurologist a CAT scan of my brain was taken. After a repeat CAT scan the doctor changed my diagnosis. I had a brain tumor. (Read the complete story)

Latest Update on Michael Burris

November 11, 2008

Greetings! I pray this update finds you blessed and doing well. It’s been about a month since I last “blogged”, so I thought I’d bring you all up to date. As you know, I had a seizure while driving a couple of months ago. This event began a new chapter in my battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme. Although I have been put on anti-seizure drugs, the seizures have continued. Thankfully, as the doctors have adjusted my medications, the seizures have become less frequent and less severe in nature. Also, in the course of my ongoing treatment, an MRI revealed a new reoccurence located in approximately the same area of my brain where the previous tumors were located. This mass is different in that it is not one solid tumor, but rather an area about the size of a half-dollar with several “hot spots” located within.  Although one of these “hot spots”, about the size of a marble, is solid, the rest of the affected area is more hit and miss.  Because of the proximity of the cancer in conjunction with the area that controls speech in my brain, I’ve opted out of surgery at this time. Instead, I have begun a new regiment of chemotherapy which includes both the Avistin that I previously took, and an additional drug called Irinotecan. This new routine has had its difficulties. Extreme fatigue and various digestive issues are the main side effects. However I am grateful to know that the Lord God of the universe holds my life in His very capable hands.  Please pray for my next MRI which is to take place on December 1st.  Specifically, pray that all cancer would be gone and that full healing would be manifested in my body.  Also, continued prayer as I go through chemotherapy would be much appreciated.

The Lord continues to place several areas of ministry on my heart.  As He opens doors for these projects I will share more.  For now, please pray for wisdom and guidance as I seek to do God’s will.

Psalm 46:1-2 (New Living Translation)
New Living Translation (NLT)

Psalm 46
 1 God is our refuge and strength,
      always ready to help in times of trouble.
 2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come
      and the mountains crumble into the sea.

Psalm 91 (New International Version)
Psalm 91
 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
       will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [a]
 2 I will say [b] of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
        my God, in whom I trust."

 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare
       and from the deadly pestilence.
 4 He will cover you with his feathers,
       and under his wings you will find refuge;
       his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
 5 You will not fear the terror of night,
       nor the arrow that flies by day,
 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
 7 A thousand may fall at your side,
       ten thousand at your right hand,
       but it will not come near you.

 8 You will only observe with your eyes
       and see the punishment of the wicked.
 9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—
       even the LORD, who is my refuge-

 10 then no harm will befall you,
       no disaster will come near your tent.

 11 For he will command his angels concerning you
       to guard you in all your ways;
 12 they will lift you up in their hands,
       so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
 13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
       you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
 14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
       I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name
.
 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
       I will be with him in trouble,
       I will deliver him and honor him.

 16 With long life will I satisfy him
       and show him my salvation
."

Thanks again so much for your prayers and support!

I love you!

Michael Burris

My Journey UPDATE:

By Mark Yorkovich

It has been an over a year and a half since my diagnosis with Stage 4 Cancer. Originally the doctor told me that based on the severity my Cancer; I may only have 6-9 months to live. I initially shared my story with my friend Mike in October of 2007. I also did an update in April of this year. Again, many things have changed since that time so I thought would share how God has blessed me.

June, 2008

Still alive, J The Liver has responded and repaired itself so they gave me chemo again. The chemo again damaged my Liver so they stopped treatment again to let the Liver repair itself. (read the rest of Mark's story)

And here are 2 earlier stories from Mark.

GOD IS IN THE BUSINESS OF ANSWERING PRAYERS
Surviving a head-on crash with a double transport semi truck

By Nicki Kelley

James 4:2 says, “You have not because you ask not.”
Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Mark 11:24 says, “For this reason I tell you, when you pray and ask for something, believe that you have received it and you will be given whatever you ask for.”

There is no doubt that I am still alive because of a miracle.  But why?  I believe that it was simply the answer to prayer—not one prayer but several  prayers over the course of time.  My wreck happened on November 5, 2007.  My prayer covering happened many years  and many times before that.

My grandparents are praying people.  When they were both alive, every morning they prayed for each of their grandchildren by name.  That fact was not lost on each of us 14 grandchildren.  On February 21, 2001, this was grandpa’s prayer at our gathering:

Our Father in heaven, as we gather here in this room, we thank Thee for the many blessings that Thou has showered forth.  We think of the great Psalm, the first Psalm; its like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth fruit in its season and that’s the way our families have done.  We’ve strayed out many different ways but we come from all parts of the country here tonight.  We think about You and think about all the traveling and no wrecks; all safely came.  We pray that all will safely return.  We pray that we’ll think about that as we drive on the highway and that we’ll be protected through the drive for thee.  We pray for the little ones and we pray for the big ones and we pray especially that Thou will be with us and guide us in the coming days as we bow our heads and we ask it in Jesus name.  Amen. Driving Hope Campaign

Rejoicing In Hope.org and Michael Burris Ministries are pleased to announce the beginning of our Driving Hope Campaign. The Driving Hope Campaign is the placement of roadside poster billboards along major highways throughout Missouri. The billboards are designed to catch the attention of those in need of hope. They display the simple question, “Need Hope Today?” as well as the Rejoicinginhope.org address. Keep this project in prayer - that God would direct those who need hope and healing to the billboards. We have received a testimony from a young lady who was encouraged after heartbreaking news by an encounter with one of the first signs placed.
